They did not prepare us for the castration, and the first one happened right under my nose. I was on the calf's hind leg with my foot in its butt and keeping the top leg pulled straight for branding.
The vet came with what looked like a carpet or tile layer's knife. He reached down and grabbed the calf's scrotum and, in two swift moves, had sliced open the scrotum, reached in and grabbed the testicles, pulled them out a little way, and used the knife to cut through the connecting tubes and tossed them in a bucket. The calf bellowed and rolled its eyes. I would do no less if I found myself in that situation.
Then, the hot branding iron was laid on the flank, and the calf received a shot of penicillin to prevent infection. We released the calf and moved away quickly to avoid being kicked by it, which was thrashing around to regain its footing.
The dust swirled around me, finding every pore in my body. The smoke from the hot branding irons on cowhide invaded my lungs, and my entire being burst with pride and happiness as I lived what must be every little boy's dream.

A bit of a departure from what I've done. This book will be all over the place, wherever you get your e-books, but not yet. There is also a print version if that's what you prefer - links below. This one is the story of my career, although I tend to think of it as a series of guesses and mistakes. Whatever you want to call it. I hope you find it fun to read. I'm working on an audiobook - that turns out to be a bit more complicated than I expected. Presently, the e-book sites are not online as my publisher seems to be merging with another company. As soon as that is resolved, I'll have it available here.
